Workshop: Teaching Critical Life Skills

Despite the age or functioning level of your child/client with Autism Spectrum Disorder you have undoubtedly been faced with challenges teaching many life skills. During this free workshop you will be provided with a gamut of techniques for determining the critical life skills for your child/client and the tools for teaching those skills. Areas to be covered include:

  • Assessment of Functional Life Skills
  • Hygiene
  • Dressing appropriately
  • Mealtime skills
  • Money skills
  • Household Maintenance
  • Managing behaviours around life skills

Speakers:

Kara Wenzel, M.A. (Psych), Behavioural Consultant (Society for Treatment of Autism)
Kara Wenzel completed her Master’s of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology from City University of Seattle in 2011. She has been employed by Society for Treatment of Autism since 2000. In her position as a Behavioural Consultant, Kara is responsible for: participating in assessment of cognitive and adaptive functioning; developing and implementing individualized program plans (i.e., for children aged 2 to 18); consultation and training of front line staff; parent training; developing and implementing positive behaviour support plans based on functional behavioural assessments; consultation to school settings; community education; and material creation to target individualized goals. Kara also has experience counselling youth with ASD. Special areas of interest include: prevocational training for youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders, effective techniques for addressing anxiety issues and ASD in youth, and removing the barriers that prevent children with ASD from participating in community recreational activities.
Sarah Taylor, B.A., Behavioural Consultant (Society for Treatment of Autism)

Sarah Taylor has been employed by STA for 14 years. She has a broad range of experience across the Early Intervention, Transition and Residential programs as a frontline therapist; and as a Behavioural Consultant she helps youth with autism meet their full potential by participating in cognitive and adaptive functioning assessments, developing and implementing individualized program plans, creating and monitoring behaviour plans, and providing consultation and support to families, caregivers and classrooms living and working with Autism.
